About Owler and the Study

The 2017 Owler Perceptions of Leadership Team Diversity results are based on a proprietary algorithm developed by Owler to determine how employees and other stakeholders assess an organization’s leadership team from a diversity perspective.

For this study, we had a simple line of questioning, asking respondents:

  • Do you think this company has a diverse leadership team?

The final results are based on 11,700 stakeholder responses in total, and provided an assessment of leadership team diversity for over 1,100 unique organizations.

Owler’s algorithm for this study evaluates the weighting of a response based on the specifics of the person who rated the CEO. Inputs from employees, followers, competitors and other stakeholders are weighted differently in the model, and the algorithm ensures that multiple inputs cannot be submitted by the same individual.

To ensure the integrity of Owler’s statistical model and to fairly report on perceptions of leadership team diversity, the results of the 2017 Owler Perceptions of Leadership Team Diversity Study exclude companies with less than 20 responses.

Results of the study were tabulated to assess:

  • Which companies are perceived as headed in the right direction with respect to leadership team diversity? The study includes a list of companies that were in the top quartile, suggesting that these are firms where the perception tends to be that the leadership team is diverse.
  • Which industries are viewed as having diverse leadership teams? We focused on the 18 industries that were most heavily represented within our data set. Then, we ranked those industries according to their median score.
  • What areas of the country tend to be viewed as doing well with respect to leadership team diversity? We rank all US regions and subregions by median score.
  • When it comes to leadership team diversity, do public companies get more or less credit than private companies for building diversity into managerial and executive levels of the organization? The Owler study presents statistics from the data to answer this question.
